William Thomas Autry

William Thomas (W. T.) Autry, 93, of Hickory Flat passed away June 23, 2018 at Magnolia Place in New Albany surrounded by family and friends.  He was born April 27, 1925 in Benton County to Thomas Jefferson Autry and Willie Lee Roberts Autry.

He was drafted at the age of 18 and reported to Camp Shelby. In April of 1943, he entered the U.S. Navy and was deployed overseas to Samar, Philippines in August of 1945 where he helped load injured soldiers on airplanes to bring them home.  He was honorably discharged in New Orleans on March 16, 1946 and was a proud member of the American Legion for 73 years. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 26 years until he retired in 1985.

Since childhood, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting in Benton County in the areas that he knew as home. He passed this heritage on to his grandsons and enjoyed sharing his stories with them.  He was well known for cooking stews, catfish, and his famous hushpuppies for many community gatherings.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m.Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at First Baptist Church Hickory Flat with Rev. Johnny Rakestraw officiating. Visitation will be Monday, June 25, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Hickory Flat. Burial will be at Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery in Ashland.  Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Thompson Autry; four daughters, Brenda Brown (Fred) of New Albany, Janice Gibbons (Richard) of Eads, TN, Gail Gunter of Germantown, TN, Teresa Joslin (Terry) of New Albany; eight grandchildren, Steve Brown, Chris Brown (Ryksie), Kevin Peeler, Kelly Peeler (Cyndi), Shauna Thompson, Jennifer Hogue (Jaysen), Elizabeth Coombs (Braxton), and Michael Joslin (Lauren); nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild with another arriving in November; one sister, Josie Whitehead of Millington, TN; and special friends, Ricky and Clare Pipkin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ennis Autry; four sisters, Rivers Dickerson, Gracie Autry, Clara Bryant, and Ruth Moody. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kevin Peeler, Kelly Peeler, Steve Brown, Chris Brown, and Michael Joslin, his nephew, Lee Autry, and special friends, Ricky Pipkin, and Glenn Cossitt.
