Elsie Marie Keen Ayres, 88, died Monday, July 30, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born March 13, 1924, in Ackerman to John and Musette Ward Keen. She was a graduate of Ackerman High School and Blue Mountain College. After college graduation she began teaching school at Hickory Flat where she met and married her husband, Sidney Rivers Ayres. A longtime teacher and homemaker, she and her husband lived near Hickory Flat for over 65 years where they farmed and raised their family.
A visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. July 31, 2012 at the Hickory Flat United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the church with the Rev. Brownie Towhill, the Rev. Neal Vick and the Rev. Lanny Autry officiating. Burial will be in the McKay Cemetery in Hickory Flat. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In addition to her husband of 65 years, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Autry (Lanny) of New Albany; and son, Sid Ayres (Karr) of Hickory Flat; a sister, Betty Sue Adams (Everett) of Ackerman; a brother, Lamar Keen (Clarise) of Oxford; and a sister-in-law, Maurice Keen of Leland; four grandchildren, Jessica Simmons (Glen), Annah Barnes (Brandon), Amy Williams (Ken) and Susan Currier (Joe); and seven great-grandchildren, Ty Simmons, Mason, Josiah and Amos Currier, Emily, Luke and Sam Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold Keen and Leon Keen; and special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Minor and June Ayres.
Pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law, Ken Williams, Glen Simmons and Brandon Barnes; great-grandson, Luke Williams; and Gerry Paul Moffitt and French Woods.
