She was born February 8, 1927 in Huntingdon, Tennessee, to Alma Herbert and Aline Giles Ross. After graduating Huntingdon High School at age sixteen, she attended Union University for one year before attending and graduating from Memphis State University. She then taught school in Titusville, Florida, and Nashville, McKenzie, and Collierville, Tennessee. In January of 1959, she married Alfred Loftin of Mt. Pleasant, and they made their life together there until his death in 2011. She developed a great love and appreciation for family while in the hospital with a respiratory condition for a year in 1956. She had a deep faith in Jesus Christ and reflected Him to her family and friends. She loved to study the Bible and participated in a ladies’ Bible study, as well as taught Sunday School, for many years. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family all her life. She especially enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren in their activities over the years. After her children were grown, she taught school in Mt. Pleasant for 11 years before retiring. Two of her favorite pastimes were reading and reminiscing on family and community history.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a grandson, Samuel Hawkins. She is survived by her children Ross (Charlotte) of Guntown, Mark (Lori) of Mt. Pleasant, and Jean Hawkins (Stan) of Como. Eleven grandchildren: Laura Backstrom (Miles) of Tupelo, Benton Loftin of Tupelo, Rachael Burnett (Paul) of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Loftin (Lindsay) of Mt.
