John Paul Bumpas, 87, passed away at his home in Hickory Flat on March 29, 2024. He was born in Mt Pleasant, Mississippi, on February 7, 1937, to Russell C Bumpas and Genie Burchette Bumpas. Mr Bumpas graduated from Marshall County Agriculture High School in 1955, and then attended Mississippi State University where he obtained degrees in Aviation Administration and Business Administration. He served with the United States Air Force Reserve and Auxiliary for approximately fifteen years, attaining the rank of Major. He retired from the Social Security Administration as a service representative, and served as a Deacon in the Baptist Church for over thirty six years. Mr Bumpas enjoyed painting landscapes, fishing and flying airplanes.
Mr Bumpas was married to his beloved wife, Mattie Collins Bumpas on December 14, 1963, and were married until Mattie passed away on June 14, 2016. He married his second wife, Ruth Phillips Bumpas on March 9, 2018, Mr Bumpas is survived by his wife, Ruth Bumpas of Hickory Flat. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mattie Collins Bumpas, three brothers, Oliver Bumpas, Kent Bumpas, and Dean Bumpas, and a sister, Maxine Woods.
Services for Mr Bumpas will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 11:00 am,at the First Baptist Church of Hickory Flat. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the church on Monday evening, April 1, from 5:00 until 9:00 pm. Burial, following the funeral service, will be at Hill Crest Cemetery. The Holly Springs Funeral Home has charge.
