He was born at home, in Cornersville, on December 28, 1932, to Shields Earl McCallum and Georgia Goode McCallum.  Mr McCallum was a graduate of Potts Camp High School and Delta State University.  He was a United States Air Force veteran, and received an honorable discharge after four years of service as an Airman Third Class.  He retired after thirty six years as a teacher at Potts Camp School, where he wore many hats that included bus driver, senior sponsor, score keeper at basketball games, and friend and mentor to all he taught.  Mr McCallum was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and a deacon for many years.  He had a big heart and a strong compassion for all of the children whom he touched.

Mr McCallum is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Peggy Teel McCallum, two daughters, Lindy Holmes (JJ) and Jill Stephens (Rodney), both of Potts Camp, and a son Lance McCallum (Cole) of Cornersville.  He also leaves seven grandchildren, Caleb and Charlie Holmes, Hutton and Harlynn Stephens, and Deuce, Georgia, and Levi McCallum, and siblings Twilla Rutherford and Joe McCallum.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings EV (Vleet) McCallum, George Vance McCallum, Alene Randolph, Red McCallum, Dorothy Forester, and  SE (Jack) McCallum.

Services for Mr. McCallum  will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Salem Baptist Church at 11:00 am.  A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Holly Springs Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 28, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm.  Burial, following the service will be at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery.  Brother Randy Bynum and Brother Phillip Brock will officiate.  Pallbearers will be Caleb Holmes, Hutton Stephens, Deuce McCallum, Levi McCallum, Tom Cooper, Keith Cooper, Jonathan Moore, Kyle Poole, Justin Roberts, Gene Sanders, and Mike Thompson.  Honorary pallbearers will be Stephen Brock, Earl McCallum, Gary McCallum, Terry McCallum, Don Randolph, Ken Randolph, Bill Rowland, Jimmy Rushing, and John Paul Teel.

Peggy and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of this passing of your loved one. Mr. McCallum, as we always referred to him, was a long time friend of our family. Beginning with the friendship and teacher to our sons Danny and Donald. He kept up with them through the years. They have those memories to cherish as we do.
I know he will be missed by the family, but you know where he is.
May the Lord give you peace now and as you are going through sorrow.

Mr. McCallum touched so many lives and was such a positive influence on so many students at Potts Camp. His guidance and mentoring didn’t end after high school and he reached out to me almost every year to check on me and my family. He inspired and motivated me more than any teacher I ever had. He will be missed.

Mr. McCallum was one of my favorite teachers in High School and the one I probably have the most memories of. He made a point of befriending me early in my High School career and always made a point of greeting me and talking to me if he saw me out anywhere. Mr. McCallum always had the biggest smile, sweetest demeanor, and funniest sense of humor. He was a great Christian leader and I feel honored to have known him and learned from him. The world may be a duller place without him, but I look forward to shaking his hand one day in heaven, and telling him thank you for all he did for his students.

Mr. McCallum was one of those teachers that gave everything he had even when we acted like we had no home training. He was funny "good God in glory" was my favorite phrase he used to reprimand us. He taught me and my siblings, then my nieces and nephews. You will be missed sir. I was the one who passed out the Ray Charles sunglasses for us to wear. God bless the family. Class of '83
