Helen Doris Williams was born in Cacye, MS, on December 17, 1922, to Drury Ransom Williams and Beulah Powell Jones and sister to Ella Catherine. She was crowned Miss Byhalia in 1939 and graduated Salutatorian from Byhalia High School in 1940. Doris attended Ole Miss the following year where she was a loyal member of Delta Gamma Sorority.
Frank Moore was the love of her life and proposed to her on top of the Peabody Hotel. Doris traveled on a train for two days to marry Frank Moore while he was a cadet in the Air Corps in Phoenix. Doris and Frank were married there on May 4, 1943. After World War II, they settled in Byhalia, MS and raised their family.
Doris Moore worked for Gem, Inc. for ten years and retired from the US Postal Service after 32 years. She was a member of Byhalia United Methodist Church for 85 years and loved serving the United Methodist Women. As a part of this mission, she participated in preparing monthly meals for the Byhalia Lions Club for 65 years. Doris loved her flowers and was a leader in the Byhalia Garden Club for 72 years. Some of her favorite hobbies were creating banners and folding bulletins for her church, watching Ole Miss athletics, gardening, sewing, and playing Bridge monthly.
Doris Moore celebrated her 99th birthday in December with her family. Doris went to heaven on February 8, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents; Frank Moore, her husband of 65 years; Catherine Herrington, her sister; and Benjamin “Jamin” Allen Moore, her grandson. She will be dearly missed by her children: William F. Moore, Jr. (Diana), Ben Moore (Tricia), and Dr. Rod Moore (Sharon) and by her grandchildren: William F. Moore, III, Sha Moore Toohig (John), Amy Moore Collins (Everett), Dr. Ryves Moore (Mary Chris), and Meredith Moore Bell (Matthew) and by her great-grandchildren: Helen Grace Toohig, Selena Kate Minor, Darby Moore, Mary Mason Moore, Archer Collins, Cressey Toohig, and Kellum Moore.
Doris Moore was known as “Bubba” to her family. Every time any of her family visited, she told them she was so “blessed”; however, her family was “blessed” to have her for 99 years.
Services for Mrs Moore will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 11:00 am, in The Flame at Byhalia United Methodist Church. A visitation will begin at 10:00 am and last until time for the service to begin. Burial will be at Byhalia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Byhalia United Methodist Church. |
